Stocking a farm dam with fish turns a water storage into a paddock that grows protein. A well-managed 0.1 ha dam supports roughly 50 fish of one kilogram each — enough for regular table fish or a productive recreation fishery. But most dam owners get the setup wrong: wrong species for their climate, no acclimation, or a dam that dries out and kills the whole cohort.

On a Roma property in 2024 I helped set up a 0.4 ha dam that now runs a stable golden perch and yabby fishery — the owner harvests around 30 kg of fish per year with almost no input. This guide walks through the whole process: dam suitability, species choice by state, sourcing, acclimation, feeding, and the permits you actually need.

Is Your Dam Big Enough to Stock?

NSW Department of Primary Industries recommends a minimum surface area of 0.05 hectares (500 m²) before stocking makes sense. Anything smaller runs out of oxygen in summer, warms up too fast, and doesn’t hold enough water through a dry year.

Depth matters as much as area. A stocked dam needs at least 2 m of water at its deepest point, ideally 3 m or more. This creates a cool refuge layer where fish sit through summer heatwaves. Shallow dams cook their fish in 40°C paddock conditions.

The other test is water permanence. If your dam went dry in the last drought, don’t stock it. Fish stocking is a multi-year investment — losing a full cohort to a dried-out dam wastes hundreds of dollars in fingerlings. If your dam leaks or drops fast in summer, fix that first. Which Fish Species Suit Your State?

Species choice is legally constrained. You can only stock a private dam with fish that are native to that drainage system. Stocking non-native species — even native Australian species from a different river system — is illegal without a permit and can result in fines.

Trout are the trickiest. NSW DPI advises that summer water temperature at 50 cm depth must not exceed 20°C — otherwise trout stress and die. That rules out trout in most inland Queensland and low-elevation NSW dams. Barramundi are the mirror: they won’t survive an average Queensland winter below 20°C without a heated pond.

Yabbies are the forgiving option. Native yabby strains do well almost everywhere in Australia and add a second harvest layer to a stocked dam. NSW DPI suggests seeding 20–40 breeding yabbies for a 0.1 ha dam.

Do You Need a Permit to Stock?

Queensland Government rules: You do not need a permit to stock a private constructed farm dam with fish species native to your drainage division. Queensland is split into five drainage divisions, and the species allowed in each are different. You cannot stock a natural waterway (creek, river, stream) even on your own property. NSW: You do not need a permit to stock native species from the correct catchment into a landlocked dam. If your dam overflows into a stream during floods, a permit may be required. Check with NSW Department of Primary Industries before ordering fingerlings.

Victoria: Private dam stocking of Victorian native species from the same catchment generally does not need a permit. Trout stocking is a separate scheme through the Victorian Fisheries Authority.

The safer default: call your state fisheries office before ordering. The hatchery will also ask which catchment your dam sits in — they cannot legally sell you fish from a different system.

Where to Buy Fingerlings

Buy from a licensed aquaculture hatchery only. Never move fish between dams, even your own. Backyard-transported fish spread parasites and diseases that can wipe out established populations across a district.

Fingerlings are typically 30–80 mm long and cost $1.50–$4.00 each depending on species and quantity. Golden perch and silver perch are the cheapest and most widely available. Murray cod and barramundi run higher. Hatcheries usually deliver in oxygen-charged plastic bags packed inside insulated boxes; larger orders come in aerated transport tanks.

Order for spring or early summer delivery. Water is warming, fingerlings grow fast, and they establish before winter cold slows them down. Don’t order for the middle of a drought — a struggling dam is not a good welcome.

The Acclimation Process (Don’t Skip This)

Fingerlings die from temperature shock more often than from any other cause during stocking. NSW DPI publishes a two-step acclimation protocol that survives around 70% of the fish. Skip it and you’ll lose most of the shipment in 24 hours.

  1. Float the sealed transport bag on the dam surface for 10 minutes. This equalises water temperature between the bag and the dam.
  2. Open the bag and slowly add small amounts of dam water over the next 20 minutes. Add roughly a cup every 2 minutes. This equalises pH, oxygen and dissolved-mineral levels.
  3. Tip the bag gently on its side and let the fingerlings swim out on their own. Do not pour them.
  4. Release into shaded, still water — never into a wind-blown or sun-exposed shallow.

Expected outcome: 70% or better survival to week one. Below 50% survival usually means the acclimation was rushed, the dam had a dissolved-oxygen crash, or the fingerlings were stressed before arrival.

How Many Fish to Stock

Farm dams typically support 200–500 kg per hectare at maturity. That number varies by water quality, feed availability and species, but it’s the anchor rule for stocking density. Overstocking causes stunted fish, oxygen crashes and mass die-offs.

Worked example from NSW DPI: a 0.1 hectare dam at a carrying capacity of 500 kg/ha can support around 50 fish weighing 1 kg each. If you’re stocking fingerlings that will average 500 g at harvest, double that number — 100 fingerlings. Order more than the target number to allow for the 30% acclimation loss.

For a mixed silver perch and golden perch fishery, split the stocking about 60:40 in favour of silver perch. They eat lower on the food chain and don’t compete with the goldens for larger prey.

Feeding and First-Year Growth

Fingerlings reach 100–500 g in their first year on natural feed alone in a healthy dam. Aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton and detritus provide most of what native species need. Trout are the exception — they generally require feed pellets to grow to a harvestable size.

If you supplement, use a floating aquaculture pellet at 1–2% of estimated fish body weight per day, split into two feeds. Don’t feed on windy days when pellets drift into weed beds and rot. Feed at the same spot each time so the fish learn to come — that’s your future harvesting station.

Aerators lift growth rates significantly. A 0.5 kW paddle-wheel or diffuser aerator running 6 hours a day at night keeps dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L and adds 20–30% to first-year growth in dams over 0.2 ha.

Common Stocking Mistakes I See on Site

Wrong species for climate: barramundi in southern NSW, trout in central Queensland. Both die within their first summer or winter. Species choice is not a preference — it’s a temperature range constraint.

Stocking a leaking dam: I’ve inspected farm dams on the Darling Downs where the owner stocked $600 of golden perch fingerlings into a dam that lost half its water in three months. Skipping the acclimation: tipping the bag straight into the dam. I’ve seen owners lose 95% of a shipment this way. Ten minutes to float, twenty minutes to mix. Non-negotiable.

Ongoing Maintenance for a Stocked Dam

Monitor water level monthly. A dropping dam concentrates fish, raises temperature, and crashes oxygen faster than most owners expect. If you’re losing more than 30 mm per week to evaporation and seepage combined during summer, investigate.

Watch for algae blooms. Blue-green algae is lethal to stocked fish and can bloom fast in warm, nutrient-rich water. Fence stock away from the dam edge, don’t run fertiliser runoff into the catchment, and add a bank buffer strip of native grass. Our dam maintenance overview covers the algae inspection schedule.

Plan harvesting from year two. Silver perch and golden perch reach a takeable weight of 500 g at 18–24 months. Trap-netting, seine-netting or rod-and-line are all legal on private dams. Take only what you plan to eat — a stocked dam recovers slowly if over-harvested.
